Generating very high field strengths over a large test area runs into the power limits of a single amplifier and antenna. A tightly coupled antenna array solves this by spatial power combining: many elements, each driven by its own amplifier channel, add their power in free space. By controlling the amplitude and phase of each channel, the array can steer the beam electronically and shape the field-strength distribution and focal spot on the equipment under test.
RFlight's NTANT-DA arrays are dual-polarised and ultra-wideband, using metallised tightly coupled elements with beamforming. The NTANT-1040DA covers 1–4GHz (L/S band) with at least 17dBi gain in a 1.2m square panel; the NTANT-4080DA covers 4–8GHz (C band) with at least 15dBi in a compact 210mm panel. Both scan ±60° and can be customised in array size. They are the radiating front end of RFlight's phased-array high-intensity radiation field (HIRF) systems.
