Overview
A clamp-on earth tester measures the resistance of an earth electrode in a multi-grounded system without disconnecting it and without auxiliary stakes. The clamp induces a test voltage into the earth loop and measures the resulting current, giving the combined resistance of the electrode and the loop. That makes it fast and safe for routine checks on power poles, telecom sites, lightning protection and building earths, and it can find earth faults that the traditional stake method cannot reach.
MEWOI's range differs in three ways: resistance range (200Ω, 1000Ω, 1200Ω or 1500Ω), clamp jaw shape (55×32mm or 65×32mm elongated jaws for flat bar and multiple conductors, or ø32mm round jaws in the 3100 series), and whether the meter also measures earth leakage current (the D models and the MEWOI3200). The flagship MEWOI3200 reaches 1500Ω and 40A leakage, stores 999 readings, has USB download and runs on rechargeable batteries.
Which model?
For basic go/no-go checks of low-resistance earths, the 200Ω B models are enough. For general earthing work choose a 1000–1200Ω model, and pick a D model or the MEWOI3200 if you also want to see leakage current flowing in the earth conductor. Choose the 3100 series if you clamp mainly round cables, and the 65×32mm jaw for earth tape and grouped conductors.
