Overview
RoHS 2.0 (EU 2015/863) added four phthalate plasticisers — DEHP, BBP, DBP and DIBP — to the six substances restricted in electrical and electronic equipment, with a 1000ppm limit for each. XRF cannot detect them, because they are organic compounds rather than elements. The EDX-4 screens for them by pyrolysis thermal desorption followed by gas chromatography with a flame ionisation detector.
A few milligrams of solid sample, or 1µl of liquid, goes straight into a quartz tube with no grinding, ultrasonic extraction or solvents. The sample is heated, the released phthalates are separated on a dedicated column and quantified, and the workstation produces a report in one click. A run takes about 20 minutes, the method works on soluble, poorly soluble and insoluble polymers alike, and the lowest detection limit is 25ppm, well below the 1000ppm limit.
Because there is no wet chemistry, no reagent waste is produced and no specialist chemical laboratory is needed: an air-conditioned room with power, a bench, a nitrogen supply and a refrigerator for the standards is enough. The system is supplied with the pyrolysis unit, gas chromatograph, column, workstation, analytical balance, hydrogen and air generators, phthalate standards and consumables.
