Overview
A power termination, or dummy load, absorbs RF power and turns it into heat while presenting a close 50Ω match, so almost nothing is reflected. It is used to test or burn in an amplifier at full power without radiating, and to terminate the unused port of a coupler, circulator or relay.
Bonn Elektronik offers two types:
- BCT coaxial terminations from DC to 18GHz, with N or 7-16 connectors. Within a frequency range, variants differ in power rating, shown in the suffix: BCT 0030-300 is a DC–3GHz, 300W termination.
- BWT waveguide terminations from 6 to 40GHz, for terminating waveguide lines directly at microwave and mm-wave frequencies, for example BWT 8018-500, an 8–18GHz, 500W termination on WRD750.
How to choose
Pick coaxial or waveguide to match the line you are terminating, a frequency range that covers your band, and a power rating above the full power the load will see, including fault conditions such as a total reflection elsewhere in the system.
