A go/no-go gauge is a deceptively simple tool — a precision-machined dimensional reference that a plug or socket either fits (passes) or doesn't (fails). But what's actually being verified with that simple pass/fail result covers several distinct safety-relevant dimensions at once.


What a Go/No-Go Gauge Actually Checks

Pin dimensions. Pin diameter, width, and length must sit within the standard's tolerance — pins that are undersized risk poor contact and overheating; oversized pins may not fit certified sockets at all, or may fit too loosely.

Pin spacing. The distance between pins must be exact enough that the plug engages correctly with a compliant socket, without excessive play that could allow partial withdrawal or arcing.

Mechanical retention. Many standards specify a minimum withdrawal force — the plug shouldn't fall out of the socket under its own weight or minor cable tension, but also shouldn't require excessive force to remove.

Insulation/creepage features. Standards like BS 1363 require partial pin insulation (a sleeve near the base of the live and neutral pins) specifically so a socket's shutter mechanism can't expose the conductive pin surface while the plug is being inserted or removed.

Why This Matters Beyond Simple Fit

Dimensional non-compliance in plugs and sockets isn't just an inconvenience — undersized or misshapen pins can create poor electrical contact that generates heat under load, a known cause of plug and socket fires. The go/no-go gauge check is a first-line defence against exactly this failure mode, which is why it's a standard, required step in plug and socket certification rather than an optional QC nicety.
