Piezoelectric ceramics convert electrical energy into mechanical displacement and back again, and the amount of displacement they produce is set almost entirely by the driving voltage and current available. Aigtek's ATA-400, ATA-4000, and ATA-40000 series are all built around this single job — high-voltage, fine-bias-adjustable driving of piezoelectric ceramic loads.

Why Piezoelectric Driving Needs Both High Voltage and Fine Bias Control

Piezoelectric actuators are capacitive loads that need enough voltage swing to produce meaningful displacement, but many applications also require a stable DC offset (bias) superimposed on the AC drive signal to set the actuator's operating point. All three series provide voltage gain and DC bias that are fine adjustable, letting the operating point be tuned precisely rather than fixed at the amplifier's design default.

Comparing the Three Series

SeriesMax VoltageMax CurrentMax PowerBandwidth
ATA-400310Vp-p (±155Vp)5.65Ap547WpDC~300kHz
ATA-4000310Vp-p (±155Vp)5.65Ap547WpDC~3MHz
ATA-40000310Vp-p (±155Vp)11.31Ap1314WpDC~1.2MHz

All three share the same 310Vpp voltage ceiling, since this reflects the practical drive voltage most piezoelectric ceramic stacks are designed around. The differentiator between them is bandwidth and current: ATA-400 is the standard-bandwidth option, ATA-4000 extends to 3MHz for faster actuator response, and ATA-40000 doubles the available current for larger or multiple parallel actuators.

Selecting the Right Series

Start from your actuator's capacitance and required response speed. Higher capacitance and faster response both increase the current draw needed to charge and discharge the actuator at the target frequency — if your calculated current requirement exceeds ATA-400/4000's 5.65A rating, the ATA-40000 series' higher current capacity is the appropriate choice. If frequency response beyond 300kHz matters, the ATA-4000 series covers that requirement without the extra current headroom.
