This is a logistics question, and getting it backwards means either buying mobility you don't need, or discovering too late your line needed a fixed station's throughput.


The Core Trade-Off

A fixed workstation brings the part to a stationary laser inside an enclosed housing, optimised for consistent, repeatable marking at production-line speed. A portable marker brings the laser to the part, trading some precision for the ability to mark components too large, heavy, or inconveniently located to bring to a workstation at all.


Where Workstations Win

Throughput and cycle time. Fixed workstations with integrated automation are built for continuous, high-volume marking without an operator manually positioning each part.

Marking consistency. Fixed optics and stable mounting maintain constant focal distance between every mark — harder to guarantee from a handheld unit relying on operator steadiness.

Operator safety simplicity. An enclosed workstation with interlocked doors converts an open Class 4 hazard into an effectively Class 1 safe environment.

Lower cost for small-to-medium parts at volume. Fixed systems are typically more economical per unit marked at meaningful production volume.


Where Portable Systems Win

Marking on installed, oversized, or immovable parts — pipework, structural fabrications, machinery already in service, vehicles.

Field service and maintenance marking — asset tagging and serialization performed on-site.

Multi-site or low-volume diverse marking where a dedicated station at every site isn't justified.

Reduced production line downtime by bringing the marker to the part in place.
