- The lab needs to build a custom test rig for a non-standard or research application, rather than following one specific published standard exactly

Periodically verifying probe dimensions against the standard's tolerance, and replacing individual probes as needed rather than waiting for a whole-kit replacement cycle, is generally the more cost-effective way to keep a compliance lab's probe inventory within spec.
