Preen AFC Series

AC Power Source / Frequency Converter, 10kVA to 2000kVA

Equipment built for one country's grid frequency doesn't automatically work on another's — a product designed for 60Hz operation needs to be tested (or actually powered) at 50Hz before it can be sold or deployed in a 50Hz market, and vice versa. Preen's AFC series addresses exactly this: an AC power source and frequency converter purpose-built for utility grid simulation and voltage/frequency conversion, covering standard 45-65Hz operation plus fixed 100Hz, 120Hz, 200Hz, 240Hz, or 400Hz options for export product testing and operating imported equipment on a foreign grid frequency.

Unlike some high-power AC sources that reach their top output only through paralleled modules, the AFC scales up to 2000kVA from a single chassis — a meaningful practical difference where facility space, cabling complexity, or system reliability considerations favour fewer, larger units over many smaller paralleled ones. Efficiency reaches up to 90% at maximum power, and the AFC handles 100% unbalanced three-phase loads alongside simultaneous single-phase and three-phase device operation, useful where a facility or production line runs mixed load types from the same power source.

A 10.1-inch or 7-inch touch screen (depending on model) combines with six hot-key groups for fast recall of stored voltage and frequency settings — relevant for repeat production testing where the same handful of test configurations get used repeatedly throughout a shift — alongside RS-232/RS-485 remote control for automated or software-driven operation.

Available as a Containerized / IP54 Option
Like Preen's BPS shore power series, the AFC Series can be built into a customized outdoor container or upgraded to an IP54-rated enclosure as an optional configuration — useful for ports, construction sites, remote installations, and other high humidity, heat, dust, or corrosion-exposed environments. Standard indoor chassis remain the default; contact Finch to configure a containerized or IP54 version for your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the AFC and a standard programmable AC source like the AFV?
The AFC is specifically oriented toward grid simulation and frequency conversion applications, with fixed-frequency options (100Hz, 120Hz, 200Hz, 240Hz, 400Hz) suited to export testing and operating imported equipment. The AFV series is built more generally as a programmable AC source with disturbance simulation (STEP/RAMP programming), suited to broader compliance and R&D testing across home appliance, motor, and industrial applications.
Why would I need to operate equipment at a fixed 100Hz or 200Hz rather than a variable range?
Some equipment is designed for specific non-standard operating frequencies used in particular markets or applications, and testing or operating it correctly means matching that exact frequency rather than an adjustable range around it — the AFC's fixed-frequency options exist specifically for this requirement.
What does handling "100% unbalanced three-phase loads" actually mean?
It means the AFC can supply a three-phase load where the current draw differs significantly between phases — including, at the extreme, a load drawing current on only one or two of the three phases — without the source's performance or protection systems being compromised by that imbalance.
